Academics

LITERACY

  • Teachers at River Bend use Functional Phonics for Literacy Instruction.  This includes daily activities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Students also use Lexia to practice literacy skills.
  • MPS is in the process of a K-5 Curriculum Adoption with the plan of implementing a new Literacy Curriculum in Fall of 2025.

SCIENCE

  • Elementary Students learn through an inquiry-based approach. This approach uses science kits that are hands-on and interactive for the students. 
  • Middle School Students learn complex science topics through hands-on and interactive modules 

ART & CREATIVITY

  • Students participate in a focused Art & Creativity class 2-3 times per week.
  • In addition to learning social emotional skills daily, those skills are also practiced in this focused class.

MATH

  • K-5 Teachers use Math Learning Center Bridges in Mathematics for core instruction.
  • Math is taught through an inquiry-based and student-centered format.
  • MPS is in the process of a Secondary Curriculum Adoption.
  • Students also use Dreambox to practice math skills.

SOCIAL STUDIES

  • Students in grades K-3 learn foundational ideas in economics, civics, geography, and history. In grades 4 and 5 students continue to learn ideas in all four areas.  Students in grade 4 also begin to study geography, and in grade 5 history. 
  • MPS is currently piloting a new Elementary Social Studies program.
  • In grades 6 and 7 the emphasis is on history and in grade 8 the emphasis is on geography.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

  • Students participate in Physical Education 2-3 times per week.
  • Through the course of the year students will strive to improve in the five domains of physical fitness; cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition. 
  • Students will improve fitness while working on individual and collaborative skills related to sports.
  • Additionally students will look to improve their positive social relationships with peers and adults in the Physical Education setting. 

LIBRARY & MEDIA

  • Students have access to support in literacy, media literacy, technology and research skills.
  • Literacy materials are available to be checked out for student use on Thursdays.
